XFX 8800GTS Alpha Dog Edition

XFX’s “serious Gamer” Alpha dog edition is here, featuring all 128 shader units it’s supposed to. The only thing that distinguishes it from the GTX / Ultra model is the 256 bit memory interface. The card features a core factory overclocked to 678MHz, this means you get a core faster than an 8800GTX, and the scores show it. Shader clocks are also 1700MHz from the default 1625Mhz. Of course, the 8800GTS Alpha Dog still has the restriction of 16 Raster Operations, as opposed to 24 ROPs on the GTX / Ultra card.

Nevertheless, this card has some serious horse power and runs noticeably cooler than the GTX / Ultra cards; it’s a lot shorter, too – 9.5” opposed to 11” of the other cards. Priced lower than its elder siblings and running cooler than them, earns a lot of praise for this card. Overall this gets 4 out of 5 marks.
